Determining how to pay for treatment is a common concern among people who need professional care for addictions to alcohol and other drugs. Thankfully, if your insurance is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield, rehab coverage should be included in your plan.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Association is a national network of companies that insures more than 114 million people. BCBS policies fund treatment in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
As one of the nation’s largest insurance providers, Blue Cross Blue Shield’s coverage includes medical care, mental health treatment, and drug rehab services. As is the case with virtually all insurers, the scope of Blue Cross Blue Shield rehab coverage may vary depending on the specifics of your policy. But if you have BCBS insurance, you should definitely have access to treatment for addiction.
Blue Cross Blue Shield rehab coverage may fund treatment at several levels of care.
When you are seeking addiction treatment, it is important to understand the differences among the various levels that are available to you. At Sanctuary Treatment Center, you may receive care at one or more of the following levels:
For many people, addiction treatment starts with detoxification. Commonly referred to as detox, this is a short-term service that helps people get through withdrawal. When a person tries to end their substance abuse on their own, they may quickly become overwhelmed by the intensity of their withdrawal symptoms. In detox, people benefit from the care and supervision of a team of experts. Depending on each person’s needs, their detox experience may include medical care and/or therapeutic support.
After a person completes detox at our center in Los Angeles, they may transfer directly into our inpatient rehab program. At the inpatient level, people continue to benefit from round-the-clock care, as they did in detox. Inpatient rehab also includes a variety of therapeutic services and related activities. The general goal of inpatient programming is to provide people with the comprehensive, personalized care that will empower them to resist relapse and remain in recovery. During inpatient rehab, participants may also receive care for anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders that commonly occur alongside addiction.
Our outpatient program includes many of the therapies and support services that we also provide at the inpatient level. However, it is without the residential component and access to 24/7 support. When our outpatient program is not in session, participants can return to their homes or to alternative supported residences. Outpatient treatment can be an ideal source of step-down support. Especially for people who need additional care after completing inpatient rehab. Depending on their needs and abilities, people may also enter treatment directly at the outpatient level. They can also transfer from detox into outpatient care.
Blue Cross Blue Shield policies that include rehab coverage may pay for treatment for a variety of substance use disorders (which is the clinical term for addiction). The following are examples of the types of addiction that people often receive care for at Sanctuary Treatment Center:
Federal legislation such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equality Act require large insurers to cover mental health services at the same level as medical care. Several states also have laws to ensure that insurance policyholders have access to mental health treatment.
This means that if you have an insurance policy through Blue Cross Blue Shield, your rehab coverage should include both addiction services and mental health care.
If you aren’t sure that your plan includes mental health treatment, either contact your insurance provider or call Sanctuary Treatment Center. A member of our team can review your policy details with you and help you determine the full scope of your coverage.
When you use Blue Cross Blue Shield rehab coverage at Sanctuary Treatment Center, the mental health component of your care may include services such as the following:
