Cigna is one of the largest insurance companies in the United States. It offers a variety of insurance plans, including (but by no means limited to), group medical and dental plans, individual and family medical and dental plans, group disability plans, and group universal life insurance. 

If you have a group, individual, or family medical plan from Cigna, rehab coverage will be included in your policy. However, please note that the types of services that are covered, and the amount of coverage Cigna provides, can vary depending on several factors.

Successful treatment for addiction can occur at several levels. Some people only need to receive care at one level, while others may spend time in multiple programs. As is the case with so much about addiction treatment, there is no single perfect level of care. What’s most important is finding the level or levels that are right for you.

Depending on the specifics of your policy, your Cigna rehab coverage may include funding for the following levels of care:

• Detoxification: If the distress of withdrawal has prevented you from ending your substance abuse, then detox may be an essential part of your rehab experience. During detox, you will be under the care of experts who can offer medical and therapeutic support. This will help you get through the withdrawal process as safely as possible and with minimal discomfort.
• Inpatient rehab: At the inpatient level, you will follow a structured daily schedule that includes several types of therapy, recreational or leisure activities, meals, and times for relaxation and reflection. In addition to providing round-the-clock support, inpatient rehab also offers temporary respite from the stresses and distractions of daily life.
• Outpatient treatment: Outpatient care usually includes a few hours of treatment per day, a few days per week, without a residential requirement. You need to be at the center only when treatment is in session. An outpatient program can be a source of step-down support after you complete inpatient rehab. If you don’t need 24/7 services, you may enter treatment at the outpatient level. 

Cigna rehab coverage should fund care for all types of substance use disorders, which is the clinical term for addiction. This would include the following:

• Stimulant use disorder, which includes addictions to methamphetamine and cocaine
• Opioid use disorder, which includes addictions to heroin and prescription painkillers
• Alcohol use disorder, which is typically referred to as alcohol addiction or alcoholism
• Sedative, hypnotic, or anxiolytic use disorder, which includes addiction to benzodiazepines

Please note that this list represents some of the more common forms of addiction. If you have a substance use disorder that isn’t listed above, that does not mean that Cigna won’t cover your treatment. 

Many people who enter rehab discover that their struggles with addiction are related to a co-occurring mental health disorder. This is known as dual diagnosis. Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the more common mental health concerns that co-occur with substance use disorders. 

If you have a dual diagnosis, it’s essential to get treatment that addresses both your addiction and your mental health disorder. 

Thankfully, U.S. federal law requires insurance providers to cover mental and behavioral health treatment on an equitable level with medical care. This means that Cigna rehab coverage also includes funding for mental health treatment. However, as we have mentioned before, the scope of Cigna’s coverage for mental health services can vary from policy to policy.

We also explain the features and benefits of each type of therapy that the client will be receiving, and we encourage them to ask any questions they have.
